Sonia King, mosaic artist, creates contemporary art mosaics for gallery, architectural, community and home settings. Her award-winning mosaic art is exhibited both nationally and internationally and is represented in private, public and corporate collections.

"Sonia King has searched out gentle terrains within the natural world in order to provide us with intimate views of our environment. Her earth-toned mosaics are abstract landscapes that are both familiar and complex."   -JoAnn Locktov, Author, The Art of Mosaic Design

"The extraordinary thing about Sonia King's work is her ability to create homogeny without sacrificing the individuality of her materials. Each segment is uniquely alluring, but when assembled together becomes an engaging masterpiece."   -American Lifestyle Magazine

NEWS ABOUT SONIA KING MOSAICS

Check out the newest images on the In Progress page. Children's Medical Center of Dallas is building a new tower which includes a new front entrance for one of the largest pediatric healthcare providers in the nation. Sonia is now creating a mosaic wall for the main lobby, continuing her long relationship with Children's. The first four mosaic walls at Children's Medical Center won an international Spectrum Award recognizing creativity and achievement in the use of tile in residential and commercial design. The awards are presented at Coverings each year and is sponsored by the Tile Council of America, the Association of Ceramic Tile Manufacturers of Spain, Assopiastrelle (the Italian tile association), the National Tile Contractors Association and the Ceramic Tile Dealers Association.

Also on the In Progress page are beginning images of a mosaic installation for a private home. It will be a series of five to seven 'Nebula', integrating semi-precious stones, mineral specimens, tiles, smalti and more. The mosaics are being created on mesh and will be installed, ungrouted, moving around a curved stucco wall and floating downstairs. These are an interpretation of Sonia's fine art mosaics into a larger, permanent setting.

Sonia recently spoke at the upcoming congress of the AIMC, the international association for comtemporary mosaic. This year the congress is being held in Gaziantep, Turkey. After serving six years on the board, Sonia is now a Vice President of the international association. She is also curating The Sum of All Parts 2, the second exhibit of fine art mosaics at the Bath House Cultural Center on White Rock Lake in Dallas, TX. The exhibit will run from January 10 - 31, 2009.

Sonia is one of five featured artists in a new mosaic book by Brit Hammer, a mosaic artist working in the Netherlands. "Mosaic: Finding Your Own Voice" is full of inspiration and information for both advanced artists as well as beginners who are serious about pursuing mosaic. See Sonia's section here. The book is available at Blurb.com.

The cover story of the 'Senior Voice' July/August issue features Sonia and her mom, Sherri. Sherri has been a mosaic artist since the sixties. The article looks at the value of mutual artistic interests and lifelong sharing. Also a film crew from the new television series "The Art of Living" filmed a segment in Sonia's studio. It is now airing on the Veria Network on Dish Network, on Channel 9575.

Sonia has been selected as the artist for the new Pleasant Grove Library by Dallas' Public Art Committee. The library is currently in the design phase. Sonia is working with the architects from Hidell and Associates, designing site-specific mosaic art into the library environment.
